Does Cannabis Help You Sleep? What a New Review Found

4 Oct 2026

علوم الأعصاب والألمالأرقSleep

A Cochrane review published in October 2026 pooled nine randomised trials of medical cannabis for adults with insomnia. Compared with placebo, it may make little or no clinically meaningful difference to sleep quality or total sleep time, and it may cause more side effects [1]. The evidence is weak, so the honest answer is "not proven", not "proven useless". Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has far stronger evidence [2,3].

Does Cannabis Help You Sleep at a glance

  • What was reviewed: nine randomised trials, 537 adults aged 18 to 76 [1].
  • Sleep quality and sleep time: little or no clinically meaningful effect versus placebo, with very low-certainty evidence [1].
  • Side effects: probably more common with cannabis than with placebo [1].
  • Better-supported option: CBT-I, recommended for chronic insomnia by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine review [3].

What did the new Cochrane review actually look at?

Cochrane reviews follow strict methods, which is why doctors trust them. This one, published on 13 October 2026, searched the literature up to April 2025 and included nine trials with 537 adults. Most participants were women, and most had primary insomnia, meaning insomnia that is not explained by another illness [1].

Eight trials compared medical cannabis with a placebo. One compared it with amitriptyline, an older antidepressant sometimes used for sleep. Two trials used licensed cannabinoid medicines. The other seven used preparations made up by pharmacies, so the dose and mix of compounds were not the same from study to study [1].

Does cannabis improve sleep quality or sleep time?

Not in any way the reviewers could confirm. Against placebo, people on cannabis did not report meaningfully better satisfaction with their sleep. They slept, on average, about 8 minutes longer, but the range of results (from 23 minutes less to 38 minutes more) was too wide to mean anything [1]. Daytime functioning did not clearly change either.

The reviewers rated all of this as very low-certainty evidence. The trials were small, they disagreed with each other, and some had a high risk of bias. That is why the review does not say cannabis never helps. It says nobody has shown that it does [1].

Is cannabis safe for sleep?

The review found a higher chance of adverse events with cannabis than with placebo, and rated that finding as low-certainty [1]. The paper does not list which side effects were most common, so we can't tell you exactly what to expect. If you're thinking of using a cannabis product for sleep, including bhang or ganja, know that these are not tested, standardised medicines. The strength varies, and the effects on sleep can differ from person to person. Their legal status in India is also restricted, so ask your doctor before you try anything.

What does work better for chronic insomnia?

Talking therapy aimed at sleep. CBT-I combines changes to your sleep schedule, how you respond to being awake in bed, and the worries that keep you alert. A 2025 meta-analysis of 67 trials and 5,232 adults with long-term medical conditions such as cancer, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and stroke found large improvements in insomnia severity (g = 0.98). Dropout was about 13%, and side effects were rare [2].

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's systematic review looked at 124 trials of behavioural and psychological treatments to support its guideline for chronic insomnia. CBT-I was one of the main treatments it assessed, alongside stimulus control, sleep restriction and relaxation [3].

Who should be careful?

If you have depression, anxiety or a history of substance use, tell your doctor before using anything for sleep. Poor sleep and low mood often feed each other, and treating one without the other tends to stall. Insomnia that lasts three nights a week for three months or more deserves a proper assessment rather than another home remedy.

What are the limits of this review?

Nine trials is a small base. Participants were mostly women, few trials had long follow-up, and no trial was designed around Indian patients or the products sold here. Nobody can say from this review whether a well-made, standardised cannabinoid might help a specific group of people [1]. The fair conclusion is that the case is unproven, and that safer, better-tested options exist.

Getting help in Delhi

At Brain Bridge Clinic in Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi, an insomnia assessment starts with a conversation about your sleep pattern, medicines, caffeine and alcohol, work hours and mood, and may include screening for conditions such as sleep apnoea. From there we discuss options such as CBT-I and a structured sleep hygiene programme, with medicines considered only where they fit. If your sleep has been poor for weeks, you can book an assessment with our team. If low mood or hopelessness is part of the picture, tell us at the first visit.

Frequently asked questions

Does cannabis help with insomnia?

A 2026 Cochrane review of nine trials found it may make little or no meaningful difference to sleep quality or sleep time compared with placebo. The evidence is very uncertain [1].

Is bhang or ganja safe for sleep?

These products are not standardised or tested as sleep medicines, so strength and effects vary. The Cochrane review suggests cannabis may cause more side effects than placebo [1]. Their legal status in India is restricted, so speak to a doctor first.

Which treatment has the strongest evidence for chronic insomnia?

CBT-I has the strongest evidence. In adults with long-term medical conditions it produced large improvements in insomnia severity, with few side effects [2,3].

How long does CBT-I take?

Programmes differ. The meta-analysis found that longer treatment gave better results for sleep efficiency and time taken to fall asleep [2]. Your clinician will set the length with you.

I feel hopeless along with my poor sleep. What should I do?
