Does ADHD Treatment Reduce Health Risks? New Meta-Analysis

19 Oct 2026

Терапии, направленные на развитиеСДВГAdult ADHD

A large new meta-analysis found that people with ADHD die earlier on average than people without it, mostly through injuries and suicide, and that those taking ADHD medication had about a quarter lower risk of death [1]. The risks are real but the absolute numbers are small, and the data show association, not proof of cause. The practical message is to get a proper assessment and treatment, not to be alarmed.

Does ADHD Treatment Reduce Health Risks at a glance

  • New meta-analysis: 19 studies and about 15.9 million people; ADHD was linked to a 71% higher relative risk of death from any cause [1].
  • Medication: ADHD medicine use was linked to a 25% lower relative risk of death [1].
  • Swedish registry study: starting drug treatment was linked to fewer suicidal behaviours, substance misuse, transport accidents and criminal convictions [2].
  • Adults are affected too: about 2.6% of adults worldwide have persistent ADHD that began in childhood [3].

What did the new ADHD meta-analysis find?

Researchers in the UK pooled 19 studies with about 15.9 million participants [1]. People with ADHD had a higher risk of dying from any cause (hazard ratio 1.71). The risk was higher for suicide (1.89) and injuries (1.55), and also higher for deaths from natural causes (1.27) [1].

A hazard ratio of 1.71 means a 71% higher relative risk. It does not mean 71% of people with ADHD die early. Death is rare at any age, so even a large relative increase translates into a small absolute number for any one person. The results also varied widely from study to study, which the authors flag as a limitation [1].

Does ADHD medication lower these risks?

In the same analysis, people with ADHD who took medication had a lower risk of dying from any cause than those who did not (hazard ratio 0.75) [1]. That is an association from observational studies. People who are treated may differ from those who are not in ways that no study can fully remove.

A Swedish national registry study tried to reduce that problem by comparing people who started drug treatment within three months of diagnosis with similar people who did not. It included 148,581 people aged 6 to 64 [2]. Starting treatment was linked to lower rates of suicidal behaviour (rate ratio 0.83), substance misuse (0.85), transport accidents (0.88) and criminality (0.87) over two years. There was no clear difference in accidental injuries overall [2]. The reductions were larger among people who had previous events [2].

Key numbers from the two large studies [1,2].

Is adult ADHD common?

Yes, and often missed. A global meta-analysis estimated that 2.58% of adults have persistent ADHD that began in childhood, and 6.76% have ADHD symptoms regardless of when they started [3]. If you recognise a lifelong pattern of losing track of tasks, impulsive decisions or restlessness, an adult assessment is reasonable.

What treatments work for adults with ADHD?

A network meta-analysis of 113 randomised trials with 14,887 adults compared medicines, psychological therapies and brain stimulation [4]. Stimulants and atomoxetine reduced core symptoms more than placebo on both self-rated and clinician-rated scales [4]. Cognitive behavioural therapy, cognitive remediation, mindfulness, psychoeducation and transcranial direct current stimulation did better than placebo on clinician-rated measures only [4].

Atomoxetine and guanfacine were less well tolerated than placebo, with more people stopping them [4]. That is one reason medicine choice is a conversation with a doctor and not a default.

What should families take from this?

First, ADHD is a health condition, not a character flaw, and untreated impulsivity and inattention carry real costs for study, work, driving and relationships. Second, treatment is not only medicine. Behaviour therapy, parent training and school coordination matter for children, and skills-based therapy helps adults [4]. Third, the data cannot tell any one family what will happen. They are a reason to seek assessment early.

What are the limits of this research?

Most included studies were observational. The authors point to confounding and wide variation between studies [1]. The Swedish study used a careful design but could not randomise people to treatment [2]. In the adult treatment trials, the main outcome was measured at about 12 weeks, so long-term effects are less clear [4].

Getting help in Delhi

Brain Bridge Clinic in Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi, offers structured ADHD assessment for children and adults, followed by a coordinated plan. Depending on what the assessment shows, that can include behaviour therapy, parent training, school coordination and neurofeedback alongside any medical treatment decided with a prescribing doctor. Bring school reports, past evaluations and a list of current medicines to the first visit. You can book an assessment to find out whether ADHD explains what you or your child are experiencing.

Frequently asked questions

Does ADHD shorten life?

Pooled studies link ADHD with higher relative risks of death, mainly from injury and suicide, but the absolute risk is low and the data are observational [1].

Does taking ADHD medicine reduce risk?

Medication use was associated with a lower risk of death in a meta-analysis [1], and with fewer suicidal behaviours and other events in a Swedish registry study [2]. These are associations and not proof.

How common is ADHD in adults?

An estimated 2.58% of adults have persistent ADHD from childhood, and 6.76% have symptomatic ADHD [3].

Is therapy useful without medicine?

In adult trials, CBT and several other therapies beat placebo on clinician-rated symptoms, but not on self-rated scales [4].

Can ADHD be diagnosed in adulthood?

Yes. A clinician looks for a long-standing pattern that began in childhood and affects more than one area of life [3].
