Can Video Games and VR Help Children With ADHD?

Two 2026 reviews suggest digital programmes such as serious video games and virtual reality may ease some ADHD symptoms and thinking difficulties in children, but the evidence is uneven and low in certainty [1,2]. They are best seen as a possible add-on to proper assessment, behavioural support and, where needed, medication. They are not a replacement for any of these, and ordinary entertainment gaming is not treatment.

Can Video Games and VR Help Children With ADHD at a glance

  • Digital review: 37 randomised trials of computer programmes, serious games, exergames and VR in children with ADHD [1].
  • Result: digital tools reduced core symptoms and thinking difficulties overall, with serious games helping symptoms most and computer training helping cognition most [1].
  • VR review: 13 studies, 928 participants. The clearest benefit was for executive function, while the effect on ADHD symptoms was uncertain, and certainty was very low [2].
  • Context: ADHD was linked to higher mortality in a large meta-analysis, while medication use was linked to lower all-cause mortality [3].
  • Safety: no serious VR-related adverse events were reported in studies that reported safety [2].

What did the new reviews find?

The larger review pooled 37 randomised trials of four kinds of digital intervention: computer-based training, serious video games, exergames (games that need physical movement) and virtual reality. Digital interventions reduced core symptoms and cognitive difficulties overall. Serious games accounted for most of the symptom benefit, and computer-based training for most of the cognitive benefit [1]. Effects were stronger in children under 10 and with programmes of eight weeks or less [1].

The VR review was more cautious. It found 13 studies with 928 children and adolescents. Benefits were clearest for executive function, which covers planning, working memory and self-control. The effect on ADHD symptoms had a confidence interval that crossed zero [2].

How reliable is this evidence?

Not very. The authors of the VR review rate the certainty of evidence as very low in every outcome domain, and point to small studies, substantial risk of bias and large differences between trials [2]. The larger review also reports that effects depended heavily on the type of tool, the child's age, the dose and how outcomes were measured [1]. These reviews justify more research and careful use. They do not justify buying an app and stopping other treatment.

Is a serious game the same as playing at home?

No. A serious game is designed and tested for a specific therapeutic goal, with set tasks, difficulty that adapts to the child, and defined session lengths. Everyday games are built to keep you playing. Neither review looked at ordinary entertainment gaming, so they say nothing in its favour.

Does medication still have a place?

For many children, yes. A large 2026 meta-analysis of 19 studies and nearly 16 million people found that ADHD was associated with higher all-cause mortality (HR 1.71), including from suicide and injury, and that ADHD medication use was associated with lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.75) [3]. These are associations, with substantial differences between studies, and they do not prove that medication caused the lower risk [3]. They do support timely diagnosis and treatment. Medication decisions belong with a doctor who has assessed your child.

What else is part of ADHD care?

A full plan often combines a structured assessment, parent training, school coordination, behaviour strategies and, where suitable, medication. Neurofeedback and other brain-based approaches are studied separately, and their evidence should be judged on its own. A digital tool, if used, fits best as one piece of that plan and should be supervised so that screen time does not creep up.

How do you know if your child needs an assessment?

Look for inattention, restlessness or impulsive behaviour that appears in more than one setting, such as home and school, lasts for months, and affects learning or friendships. A teacher's feedback helps. If your child or teenager ever talks about self-harm, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24/7) or 112 in an emergency.

Getting help in Delhi

At Brain Bridge Clinic in Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi, an ADHD assessment brings together a developmental history from parents, school input, structured rating scales and observation of your child. From there the team can discuss parent training, behaviour support and, where suitable, other options with Dr. Amit Tomar. We will tell you plainly where the evidence is strong and where it is still early. If you are worried about your child's attention or behaviour, you are welcome to book an assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can video games treat ADHD?

Purpose-built serious games showed benefits for symptoms and thinking skills in a 2026 review of 37 trials, but results varied widely [1]. Ordinary entertainment games were not studied.

Does virtual reality help children with ADHD?

A 2026 review of 13 studies found the clearest benefit for executive function and an uncertain effect on ADHD symptoms, with very low certainty of evidence [2].

At what age do digital programmes work best?

In the larger review, effects were stronger in children under 10 and with programmes of eight weeks or less [1].

Does ADHD medication reduce risk?

A 2026 meta-analysis linked ADHD medication use to lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.75), but this is an association and the studies differed [3].

Are digital tools safe?

In the VR studies that reported safety, no serious intervention-related adverse events were reported, though incidence could not be estimated [2].

What should I do if my teenager talks about self-harm?
